Transport sector leaders in Uganda have launched a new alliance aimed at bringing together various public transport operators to strengthen coordination, improve access to financing and unlock economic opportunities within the industry.
The initiative, known as the Alliance for Transporters Union, was officially launched under the theme “Unity for Commercial Growth.”
The alliance brings together operators from the boda boda, taxi, bus and truck sectors in an effort to formalize and organize one of the country’s most critical economic sectors.
The Business product advisor of Union Uganda Fred Ssenoga Bagenda says the Uganda’s transport sector has for a long time remained fragmented and largely informal, limiting its ability to access financing, structured systems and collective bargaining power despite employing millions of operators across the country.
Ssenoga says, that the newly launched umbrella body, which will operate under the brand name “UNION,” seeks to create a unified platform where transport operators can access financial services, technology, partnerships and wider market opportunities.
The chairman boda boda Union Fred Mawejje saya, the initiative builds on the success of the boda boda union model which has demonstrated how organizing transport workers into a structured and technology-enabled ecosystem can generate economic value.
According to Mawejje, the alliance will integrate operators across the entire transport ecosystem including boda bodas, taxis, buses and trucks onto a single platform to enable shared access to services and business opportunities.
The platform is also expected to operate as a commercial marketplace offering products and services to members including ride hailing applications, asset financing such as bike loans, and other services like Union data bundles, vehicle spare parts, electric mobility solutions and other essential tools needed by transport operators.
The chairman Bus Union Umar Kakaire, believes the unified ecosystem could become one of the largest organized economic platforms in Uganda’s transport sector.
The initiative is also expected to contribute to Uganda’s broader economic transformation by supporting millions of transport workers and their families while contributing to national development priorities.
